The Beauty Queen of Leenane
Maureen Folan is a 40-year-old spinster, a native of the village of Leenane, Connemara in Ireland. Her sisters have each escaped into marriage and family life, leaving Maureen, trapped as the sole carer of her manipulative septuagenarian mother Mag. Maureen's horizons are suddenly expanded beyond the narrow confines of the dysfunctional relationship with her mother by the visit of Pat O'Dooley and his enigmatic brother Ray.
The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a blend of black comedy, melodrama and bleak tragedy resulting from a destructive mutual dependency. McDonagh's trademark comic spirit ranges artfully from jovial sunlight into implacable darkness. His Pillowman was a highlight of the People's Spring & Summer Season 2010.
