Can't Pay? Won't Pay!
Written in the context of the world financial crisis of the mid-1970s Can’t Pay Won’t Pay is a masterpiece of farcical satire. The drama focuses on a group of ordinary people caught out by the collapse of a free market system. The comedy comes in the form of two unlikely freedom fighters, housewives who live in the same apartment building and whose husbands also work together. Unable to afford the high prices at the local supermarket the women begin ‘liberating’ groceries and hiding their activities from their men folk by pretending to be pregnant.
Author Dario Fo is known the world over as a unique force in modern theatre. Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997 he is renown for producing great art with great appeal. Fans of his Accidental Death of an Anarchist will not want to miss his equally anarchic Can’t Pay Won’t Pay.
