My Boy Jack
"If any question why we died, Tell them, because our fathers lied.”
When the British Empire entered WWI manly virtue had no greater champion than the unofficial poet laureate, Rudyard Kipling. Using his considerable influence, Kipling secured a commission for his son despite Jack's poor eyesight. Jack did go to war and went missing in action. Like thousands of other families Kipling, his wife Caroline and daughter Elise were left questioning why the war had been fought and above all what became of Jack.
Kipling’s poem If inspired generations to play up and play the game. My Boy Jack is the story behind a later and very different poem. It is a drama brilliantly written by David Haig who acted in Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Thin Blue Line as well as The Thick of It.
