A Streetcar Named Desire

After the successful run of WEST SIDE STORY back in September, Nice Swan Theatre Company are delighted to be returning to the Peoples Theatre this Spring with two fantastic plays!

A Streetcar Named Desire formulates an epic battle of identities, manners and ultimately, psychological fortitudes. Tennessee Williams' play, as a captivating yet disturbing example of southern gothic sensibilities, strikes a chord with contemporary audiences just as it did when brought to the stage in his own lifetime; Leaving Stella caught in the crossfire, Stanley Kowalski and Blanche Dubois play out their differences in a her suffocating apartment in the French quarter of New Orleans. Stella plays a pivotal role and it is she who makes the heartbreaking decision between husband and sister.

Blanche enters a world in which light represents many unbearable realities: of her own declining beauty; of her failing psychological substance and of her unspeakable past. Ushered down by her animalistic brother-in-law Stanley, she suffers a dreadful descent into madness; torn between disgust and empathy, we relate to her as a relic of the past, caught in a downward spiral of inevitable decay.

Asking questions of familial ties and morality, Williams exposes the fragility of human relationships.  The play, propelled by intensity, promises a captivating revision of a classic.

21st February performance is accompanied by a British Sign Language interpreter
