Separate Tables

It might be low season at the lonely Beauregard Hotel in 1950s Bournemouth, but life is suddenly all stirred up when the beautiful former model Ann Shankland turns up to confront her alcoholic ex-husband (who is secretly engaged to the hotel owner).

Meanwhile, the snobbish Mrs Railton-Bell discovers that the kindly, if rather doddering, Major Pollock is not what he appears to be. This news is particularly shocking for her frail daughter Sybil who is secretly in love with the Major.

These two stories unfold at the table by the window and table seven respectively. Separate Tables is widely regarded as Rattigan’s finest work, showcasing the talents of one of the twentieth century’s most significant and accomplished playwrights.
