It's an important time in the history of the People's Theatre. As we deal with the challenges of an aging building, we need to continue to make improvements to ensure we can continue to bring great theatre to the heart of our community for generations to come. We don't receive any public funds – the majority of our revenue comes from ticket sales. But this only goes some way towards the money needed for the upkeep of the building.

We’re planning to invest in three large projects that will help us become fit for the future:

We need to tackle a number of concerns related to the building itself, including the insulation, heating and air handling systems. (You might have noticed our auditorium can get very hot in summer and cold in winter!) We’re also considering the potential impacts and benefits of net-zero solutions like solar generation, heat pumps and battery storage.

Although you never see it, our stage-management system is the backstage control hub where the stage manager coordinates lights, sound, set changes, performers and front of house to keep the show running smoothly. It’s at the heart of every show, but it’s becoming unreliable and urgently needs replacing.

It's essential that we upgrade our stage lighting, some of which is so old we can't get replacement bulbs any more! We've calculated we can save six households' worth of electricity every year when we replace our current equipment with LEDs. This will not only save money but reduce our carbon footprint and bring us up to date with modern technologies used in theatres across the UK.

To do all this, we need the help of our audiences, friends and theatre members. Please chip in whatever you can to support our next act!
